Hello! I have found myself here at your forum in search of information. I look forward to spending some quality time here
I am a Jeep guy, but my mother in law has offered me one of her two Mercedes. Both of them have not been operated for about 3 years, and have not been started, either. Both of them interest me, but I haven't the foggiest idea about them and I am afraid they will cost me a fortune to get running again. To top it off, I am in So Cal and she (and the cars) are in Portland, Or. These are the two cars she has:
A 1970's (W123) 240D that looks pretty good inside, but the paint is horrible. The trim looks good, though. It has almost 300K miles and is a manual tranny. I am intrigued by this car because it is a diesel and, from what I have read so far, are very reliable. I have also heard that they can not get out of their own way (not too big of a concern...I am used to a Jeep!) and that the AC is a PITA and expensive to fix when it goes. I need AC in So Cal!
The second choice is a 1985 (W126) 500SEC. It is OK inside and out, the paint is definitely better than on the 240D, but the trim is tweaked in a few spots. The thing that concerns me about this one is the expense of replacement parts and repairs. This car has 250K miles.
I am thinking the 240D would be good as a commuter and an easier car to work on.
To make matters more difficult, I would have to get the car back to California after I got it running. Ideally, I would drive it, but I would hate to get stranded somewhere.
So......what would you do?!
I appreciate all responses, and I will stop here before I really start rambling.
