Help! problems with throttle and temperature after valve adjustment
I'm not quite new, have posted before but am relatively new to this site.
I've had my 300TD wagon (275,000miles) for 4 years, and have a love/hate relationship with it.
I just adjusted the valves and had some problems.
1) I can't for the life of me get enough clearance an the #5 intake valve (closest to the firewall). The spec is 10mm, and I am only able to get 8mm. I kept turning the adjusting nut clockwise (and then the locking nut, to keep the nuts from locking up again, and then the adjusting nut again etc.), but never seemed to get enough clearance. A couple of times i got there, but when I locked the nuts, the clearance tightened back up to 8mm.
2) I gave up and left it at 8mm (all the other valves are to spec) and put the car back together. Is it okay to drive like this? What might be going on?
3)I started the car, and the temperature sensor is now all wonky. It fluctuates rapidly between 40 an 80 for a few minutes, then settles at max temp. Could this be a result of improper valve adjustment?
4) The throttle doesn't seem to work. When I step on the gas pedal nothing happens, no increase in rpms. I was careful to stick to a "before" picture of the linkages, so I believe I put it back together correctly. I'm wondering if I damaged the firewall throttle linkage when removing it? Is there a way to test this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
