Hood emblem

Last night, in rough part of the city, someone stole my MB hood emblem (this happened once in the past) so I decided to do something about it. I am about to order the genuine part today but cannot help to wonder if there is any way to prevent removal of the emblem without opening the hood or at least make it more difficult?. Do you have any ideas how to prevent this in the future? The emblem does not cost a fortune but I would rather keep this one safe.

Also, have you ever bought one from the dealer? I saw one online for ~40$ so I wonder if there is a huge difference.

Thanks!

AutohausAz has it for $30. Seems like the dealership had it for $25 or so the last time I bought one (a year or two ago). Where in MI are you? The dealership I am referring to is Grand Blanc Motorcars

Hi Michael,

As you mentioned, I called my local dealership and ended up buying one for 29$ which is still a great deal! Thanks for the advice! I am currently in the Lansing area.

The options to prevent theft are fairly expensive. There is a company that makes a removeable star, you just take it off when you park. Last time I heard about it the cost was about $100, and then you have the bother of having to remember to take it with you, too.

Many years back I had someone try to steal mine and they ended up gouging the paint on the hood (visible in the shot below), but didn't get away with the emblem. Heck, I'd have gladly opened the hood and removed it for them if they'd just have asked instead of damaging my paint, particularly since the star had some dings in it anyway. I ended up making one that sits flush; while I miss my "gunsight," it's nice to know my hood won't be vandalized again.

Good luck with the new one.

Good deal. Glad to be of help. Now hope you can get it put on. I had a hard time getting the underside twisted to lock the emblem in place!

Michael, I bet it won't surprise you to know that Hazet makes a tool just for that specific purpose. Odds are it probably costs $100, too.

I tried to buy the tool but could not find it on their website. I ended up taking it down to the bodyshop I use. They took care of it free on charge....I bought the guys lunch.
