1962 Mercedes 220 se 6cyl stick. Bought $800 1971. Driving Indiana Toll Rd on devils night '72-Pumpkin dropped from overpass-hit hood, then windshield. Stopped truck stop, told trucker just killed same overpass -pumpkin-said I was lucky. Went to get windshield replaced-guy said "your 3/4" thick windshield is what saved you". The car was hand built, to my knowledge it had sleigh track motor mount rails that forced moter downward under feet in front end collision, doors that shut 100% when let go and not pushed, independent suspension, 17 coats of paint.
Repair costs have scared me from buying another. Quality went down when components were outsourced about the time we were merged. Opel had a better jd powell number.
I currently drive a 1999 4 cyl caravan with 301k on it orig motor ect. I believed why buy anything else? I paid 3k used and got 200k miles out of it and except for rust would not be here ow asking which year and model should I get for my 28 year old daughter now living in San Diego and working law firm. New baby to day care daily 20 min drive.
Several 1 owner Benz available Souther Cal. Car-part.com shows replacement motors @ 800 and trans @800 for both e class and s class 2000-2002. Only reason considering as we are not able to pay 10k for a motor.
So in light of my recent discovery ( motors/trans reasonable) my question is are they junk? Should I buy one? 5-10k to spend.
Which model? Which years?
Should I change my thinking and get a model with 4k replacement engines or is quality same just supply demand reason such cheap motors from salvage yards?
Just want her to be able to drive a mercedes if at all practicle. I know there is some maintenance but there must be a reason these cars are 60k new, or is it all union labor the only reason.
Wanting to get one , but show me the data in Motown.
