Used ECU (ME-SFI) can be reprogrammed despite MB saying it cannot

Over on the R170 forum I've been having a kompressor problem which I finally diagnosed down to a fault in the ECU. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170...y-blowing.html

MB UK stated that a used ECU CANNOT be recoded to suit my car - they are wrong! Shame on you MB for your arrogance

I purchaced a used ECU on Ebay for £75 and ALLCAR ELECTRONICS Allcar Electronics in Derby, England took my original, faulty ECU, extracted (flashed?) the immobiliser etc. information to the new one for £130 - job done!

I have no affiliation to ALLCAR, just respect for their honesty and excellent turnaround service

You and your dealer are basically both right. An unmodified second hand ECU (for any reasonably new MB model) cannot be coded to a different car with official diagnosis tools.

Your parts supplier has modified the used part to look like a fresh spare part (modified the SW to be "virgin"). Since it looks like an original unused spare part, even your dealer would be able to code it to your car (if they are willing to use customer's parts).

You're right DB, the point which I found to be arrogant was the MB main dealer catigorically stated "it wasn't possible"

I understand a Dealer's reluctance to work with used parts - I used to be in the Trade but that wasn't the point I was trying to make.

In my case the used ECU wasn't "virginised" - it just came off another vehicle - the specialist recoded it.

I can tell you whole book of myths dealers can tell you.
Back in 1997 it was me who informed selling dealer that my new Mercedes come with 115mph governor, what I was reaching on 3rd gear still having 4th and 5th to spare.
Even calling MB USA brought the same results.
Coming to programming computers - it can be economical matter. Having roots in Eastern Europe, I know that programmers there can spend 100 hours to reprogram $300 computer as the $300 is worth their time.
In US the $300 makes 2hr of dealer time.
