MB Newbie- Major Dilemma

Hello all.

While I frequent numerous car web boards, this is my first time at an MB site. I've been perusing the board and it seems chock full o' information so I am glad to have found it.

So, first things first- I do not own a MB. I have in the past owned other German cars and am known to dabble a little here and there with an eclectic mix of brands. My reason for being here? Well, recently my mother has decided that she needs a different car. For what reason? I do not know. She wants to keep the price low and I thought that I might be able to source an inexpensive luxury brand car and apparently I am correct. We've looked at Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Benz...

The criteria is 4 door and automatic (claims her knee hurts with manual)

My greatest fear is automatic trans failure (which I could probably fix but would prefer not to have to fool with)

The other concern is the timing chain (guides) issues that all of the above brands seem to have issues with. It seems like BMW & Jaguar has more of a problem than Benz but I could be mistaken. I can fix all that stuff and might do so anyway but, I'm trying to get a feel for if this is really an issue or if it is rare.

We've been looking at 97-99 E320 (no wagons). 120k+ miles.

The goal is to secure the car and make sure it is 100% before delivering it to her so that I can be sure (at least for a while) that there will be no issues.

Am I on the right track? Any suggestions or recommendations?
