What's to debate? If the benefits of the AMG models dovetail with your priorities, they are worth it.

Since you haven't said anything about your priorities -- not to mention their relative weights -- how can anyone here help with that decision?

Happy shopping.

AMGs cost more to run but give great performance. Improved power, nicer seats better handling.

The normal models are good too

Prev Merc: 2005 E320cdi sport

AMG is fun to drive, but beside high maintenance they do suffer the biggest depreciation.
That might be a good thing if you are buying used one, but the ML55 AMG with designo package I used to own took almost a year to sell and big financial loss regardless low purchase price.
You never know how the market turns and a sample is W210 comparison. AMG originally cost way more than diesels, when now, being few years old diesel cost about double what the same year AMG.

Unless you really feel the need for the extra HP, get the non-AMG variant. Generally speaking, there are two kinds of used AMGs out there, the ones that have been babied (basically garage queens) and those that have driven hard. People don't typically buy AMGs to drive like a "normal" car, so often they have seen some hard miles, even if they may be "lower mileage".

Drive both. Take the E430 for a spin, if that gets your juices going enough, then get it and be happy. If not, step up to the E55. If the E430 is like WOW to you, then drive the E320 and see if that is enough. When I went shopping I didn't want the ultra-HP beast, and the E320 was more than enough. Plenty of power and acceleration, will do 130 without straining, I mean it's really how much faster you want to get to speed. Drive the E320 moderately and you see 30+ on the highway, which is a nice benefit when you're pumping premium fuel.

That aside, if you really love power and speed and would think about track days, then you are probably more of an AMG-ite at heart.

Good luck.

I would go E class due to the extra room in the back seat.
