1988 420SEL gas smell
First I want to say thank you to everyone on this forum for all the answers I have been able to dig up to solve every issue with my Benz. I have enjoyed learning about, working on, and fixing the problems which have arisen (not many, just annoying)over the last few years.
Ok, I have a 1988 MB 420SEL with 151,000 miles. It runs wonderfully well (burns about 1qt of oil every 1000 miles though... is that normal?), starts instantly, but I have a few issues which still need to be resolved and I would enjoy trying to fix them myself. So, if anyone has any advice, I would sincerely appreciate it.
Problem number 1... About 2 months ago when I was driving and came to a stop sign, I noticed the smell of gasoline through the heater vents. The smell is not a continuous problem, but occurs occasionally when I stop and go and turn corners. There is no fuel leak visible anywhere. When I go to a store and park the car, I can smell gas fumes outside the car also (again occasionally, not consistently). If the vents are turned off, there is no gasoline smell whatsoever.
I have read that the problem may be the fuel cap and/or the EHA Valve o-rings. Could it be anything else that anyone has experienced with a similar situation?
Problem number 2... No matter which vent button I push on the HVAC controls on the dashboard, the air flow always comes through the front facing and/or upper vents only. The floor vents never engage and do not flow, nor is there any heat coming through the rear vents between the seats, just cold air. Any ideas?
I would appreciate ideas, and/or feedback, and thank you in advance.
