Post CLK430 girl with lost key

Hey everyone,

I own a CLK 430 1999. I have misplaced my car key outside somewhere. I don't have a spare and apparently it's going to cost me $300 bucks to get a new one. Is there any type of tracking device on the smart keys?

Or, does any one know how to "cheat the system" When I talked to a guy at the dealership he said you absolutely can't reuse an old fob. He said each key was programmed separately.

Thanks for any advice and feel free to email me at biancabekkers@gmail.com

When I lost the keys to my SL I had to call the dealer with proof of ownership and a drivers license along with vin number. From there they ordered a new key that came already programed to the car via Mercedes. It took about a week and my SL sat there open with no keys but in your case it would be best to get a extra key made as well and keep one in a safe spot in case this does happen again. I am not familiar with the "cheat the system" or the "tracking" device on the keys.
Where are you located? Do you have a couple of dealers to get prices from?

missing key

Hey thanks for the response and the advice. Since they keys are pretty much $300 its going to be hard for me to pay for the new key(s) I was hoping to get around having to go through a dealer, but i guess im just going to have to do it.

A good indi shop can source one for you as well. Find a good one in your area. Use this forum of recommend shops listed on the main page as well to find one near you.

You have my total sympathy, as I have mislaid my car keys several times in the past 6 years.

The last time it happened I was convinced that it had dropped to the ground while I walked the dog. I went over the route many times, when suddenly it was found down the back of the sofa! Fortunately I did have a spare key to keep me going, but the result of this episode is that now the car key always gets kept in a safe place.

The fact that there is no work-around is the reason that your car is so hard to steal. Without the key a thief might get through the door, but he won't drive your car away.
