1994 E200 petrol coupe

No answers from my earlier query, so I suspect not an easy to solve problem.
So, maybe trying to go back to basics will help.
What could make an engine lose power intermently? The engine just fades out, does not run roughly and then smoothly picks up power.
Any thoughts would be a step in the right direction.
