Unhappy Check engine ON: EGR Valve And Tube

Hey everyone. I have a Mercedes-Benz C320 year 2003. Last week the check engine light came on. I took the car to an AutoZone and the code in system says: EGR Valve and Tube or at least that was what the guy told me or I understood it has to be repair.

So, my question is if somebody has any experience or knows something about this issue? How much could it cost to repair? Should I take the car to the Mercedes dealership and pay the millions they charge for any repair or this is something that any mechanic could fix?

how long do I have before the car let me down or what is that code system about? etc.

Thanks for any advice, link or info that let me know what is this about.

I own a cheap Mercedes C320 that only gives me headaches.

It is not a complex repair. The codes from Autozone are not very specific.

The EGR tube is blocked or broken. The other possibility is that the EGR valve itself has failed and needs replacing. A good German repair facility can handle either issue. The sooner the better to get it fixed.

How many miles? You could remove the tube and clean it. All it would cost you is a couple of hours and some cleaner. It might solve your problem, it might not. There is a DIY on the w163 forum at some point but I am sure there is more than one.

you could drive that way until you need something else , this is not affecting the car . diagnose it right so you dont replace good parts .for now , just drive .

Hi Noodles, thanks for answer. I talked to a mechanic and he says it is the EGR Valve which is broken. He also said I can leave it like that but when the state inspection time arrives, my car isn't going to pass the test.

Hi Michael, thanks for answer. My car has 94k miles. I talked to a mechanic and he told me that, to replace the EGR Valve he needs at least 2 days because he has to disassemble half of the engine to put the new one. He said the valve is cheap but the repair doesn't because of the location of this valve in the engine, and it could cost me about $700 because of the hard work disassembling and reassembling the engine.

No idea if he saying the truth.

Hi agillot, thanks for your answer. This is the same what my mechanic told me, that this is not affecting the car, but he also say I am going to need to repair it someday because like that isn't going to pass the state inspection, and he also said this is going to affect the Fuel MPG of the car with the time, I don't know if that's true.

The most I have done with EGR issues is pull the tube and clean it. Did it on both my 3.2L engines. Hopefully someone else can answer you question. I dont know how much goes into replacing the EGR valve. Did you do a search by any chance?

this should not affect the gas mileage .to replace the valve on a 112 engine , 1 hour should do it , it is not that hard . if the guy bill you for 2 hours , including testing , that would be ok .on the 2 i replaced , it was not the valve itself , it was the small solenoid that is attached to valve , but you cannot buy it separetly .if that is the case , you could replace the solenoid only , and save the new valve just in case .
