Multifunction display issues

We have a 2002 C-320 wagon that we purchased used. The car has a number of minor issues, but my number one issue right now, is the multiunction display.

When the engine is first started, the display is relatively bright and viewable. After driving the car for awhile, the display gets dimmer and dimmer until I can no longer see anything on it. I am not sure whether heat or bright sun light has more of an impact on it or not.

While this is somewhat annoying, I can live with it as is, but if it is doable, I would certainly like to take care of it.

The service rep at our dealer was talking National Debt level money for them to repair/replace it, so that is out.

My question is:

Is this a common problem, how difficult would it be to find a good used unit, and what would it cost, and is this something a reasonablly handy person can replace?

Any insight that you may have would be greatly appreciated. If you need to contact me off forum, my e-mail address is
