99E320 warms up, sometimes misses 4-5 gear

I'm picking up this car in 3-4 days. Got good deal cause every so often it won't shift into high when it warms up. Cold it doesn't appear to have any problems. Now it doesn't slip, it just won't go into gear. Does anyone think there could be codes stored to pull as I believe the problem lies with an intermittent shifting solenoid. If codes aren't there, I would like ideas as to what to try. Can drain fluid and change filter, I believe there's a rebuilt set of 3 shifting solenoid and control line pressure for $82 but need to remove valve body, at $30 more there's a solenoid for TCC but don't know if can replace w/others, maybe look at condition of plate. I would like to do what I should and not have to replace fluid again. Please reply if I'm on or off base and anyone with other ideas would be appreciated. I'm transporting this 84mi., but does it sound like I could have drove it without damage as long as it shifted to high? Thanks in advance
