2001 S500 Airmatic mystery

Here's my airmatic mystery and what I've done. After the car sits the right rear lowers as low as it can go, the left rear not as much but still the wheel is about an inch from the wheel well. The left front is noticeably high and the right front is about normal.

The pump works well and raises the car. The car level is about normal when the car is started, but the rear struts are a little low as compared to the front. Front struts checked out ok and their connection point to the air tube too.

Replaced the rear shocks 2 weeks ago. Checked for leaks with the soap in the water bottle trick. Looks good. Checked for leaks before removing pump-valve block last weekend. Normal with no cracks, corrosion, etc. Replaced a cracked vacuum hose that connects the pump to the round vent thingy. The air tubes connected to the valve block just fine (10mm wrench).

I will check the front hight sensors tomorrow. Running out of things to check. Help.

Welcome to Benzworld, it is probably one of the front ride height sensors but you will need star diagnostics to test them.

ERIC.

Thanks Eric.

I removed the left front sensor recently and examined it closely for corrosion or other obvious wear. Nothing was really obvious with the exception the sensor arm spun freely. I recall reading somewhere in the many Benzworld threads there should be some resistance. I will more than likely replace it. Any other thoughts are welcome.

Please follow Eric's lead on the diagnostic protocol.

I have an Airmatic car also. Have worked out issues on many others.

The MB Star system is very good at pinpointing the cause of the malfunction.

Clearly a dead compressor is easy to self diagnose, but when you start getting into the level sensors and solenoid controlled valves it is worth having it diagnosed before a lot of very expensive parts are thrown at the problem.

Tandem pump? This pump is for ABC and not airmatic.
