Pump the tires up to maximum if mileage is so important. The ride will be horrible but you will see an incre4ase in gas mileage. You're driving a door (coefficient of friction) and can never expect good gas mileage. IMO

Driving technique can be the biggest fuel saver. Try driving at 50 mph and you will be shocked.

I would do a search on the w163 forum to see if your vehicle needs the fuel line and filter retrofit. My ML320 did. The gas mileage went up a bit after that. I probably still get around 17mpg so for your ML430, 15 mpg might not be too far off. I have a heavy foot though.

I get 18-21 hwy and 16-17 around town.
Last 1500 miles has been a combined of 18.3 for the ML 430.

Factors like tire rolling resistance, ignition condition, fuel system condition, RFG fuel if mandated in a specific area. That RFG with 10% ethanol is horrible.

LOL just kidding

Well, simple checks like tire pressures, clean filters, good spark plugs and cables, and just basic maintenance can help out with providing better gas milage. And believe it or not, i hope you don't have aftermarket wheels. Unsrpung weight also adds to decreased fuel economy. What doesn't help out now a days is the 10% ethanol/90% gasoline mixutre. Ethanol burns quicker and provides less power also.

That's the other side of the car spectrum! The best gas mileage I have been able to get was 22mpg. That is with the family packed in along with all the luggage for summer vacation. Gassed up at once we entered Ohio. Drove speed limit on fairly flat ground (dont speed in Ohio!)
Gas mileage went done in West Virginia. Driving those inclines worked the old girl out.

As others have mentioned, the top things you need to do are:

1) Drive slower. This makes the biggest difference, by far. Accelerate slowly at lights and keep it to the speed limit. Don't use cruise control. Your gas mileage can vary up to 10mpg (from personal experience) depending on how you drive.
2) Fill your tires to just under sidewall pressure. It may affect safety and ride but it will make a 2-4mpg difference in gas mileage.
3) Stop using ethanol gas! Get the good stuff, 93 octane pure gasoline. Another 3-5mpg difference.
4) If you haven't already - keep up on regular maintenance. Change the air filter and the oil. Depending on how dirty they are this may add another 1-2mpg.

Things not to worry about:

Air conditioning. It makes no difference.
Shedding weight. Unless you are carrying around hundreds of pounds of crap it isn't going to make a difference. The weight of the spare tire won't affect your gas mileage at all.
Fuel additives - no, just no.
