Which older and economical Merc for my son

I want to get my son an older Merc. Maybe a 180E W201 etc. Our petrol prices are very high so looking for a 4 cyl that does as good as possible mileage.
Any suggestions. I have a W124 3.2.

Many thanks

Get something similar to what you have. That is what I did for my son. Having 2 identical cars makes any repairs much easier to figure out.

If diesel is not that expensive where you live, the 240D is a great car that I would recommend. They are one of the most reliable cars Mercedes Benz has ever made and when maintained can run for a very long time. I just purchased mine and I got 35mpg on my last tank.

They are painfully slow though. And some are not in the best of condition. One thing to look for is proper compression and rust. There are a couple of other things as well.

A diesel 123 or 124 if diesel is cheaper than petrol where you are. Mercedes diesels are very forgiving but you have to take care of them for the engines to last a long time as Deemo 13 mentioned.

I am in the US - just bought my son a 2002 C230 Coupe Hatchback - he loves it - 6 speed manual. 125,000 miles for $5,000.
