Hello to all here on the forum.
I am a 61 year old US citizen currently back packing in South America. I started this trip 7 months ago in Colombia. Back packing here I have found one is limited to where one can go so I am currently shopping for a used Mercedes to continue my trip farther down into South America... ultimately to Patagonia. Besides that, the back pack has gotten heavy.
In the past I ve owned a couple of Mercedes, most recently a grey market E 320 that I purchased in South Florida and drove all over Mexico and Central America back in 2000. I never experienced any problems with that car and liked very much the engineering and quality.
Both gasoline and diesel are expensive here, anywhere between $5 and $7 (US)per gallon. Chile and Argentina from what I read are the same. Ecuador is inexpensive as is Venezuela with Colombia prices being closer to those here in Lima.
I am trying to decide which of the many Mercedes available on the used market here in Lima would be a good vehicle and will be asking more specifics as I go along. Of course....I would like one of the G wagons (looked at a 1988 yesterday but thats a sad story) but dont have the $$ to purchase or feed one of those.
In any case thanks for the excellent technical information here.
