1992 Mercedes 400se (NOT REVERSING)

hello i just bought this car used for 400 cash on craigslist just to have fun with it. it's really nice black with tan interior but it does not reverse. everything else works great supper great engine and all the gears going forward work great with no problems what so ever. but when i put it in reverse and press on the gas the car does not go into reverse. i was wondering maybe if you had an idea what the problem can be? i bought the car knowing it had the problem cause i had some extra fun money. thanks in advance for all your help.

At the risk of being obvious, you likely need a transmission overhaul.

Start with the obvious. Check the selector in the center console is moving correctly. Removing center console and watch it as you move it through the gears. Does it actually go fully into park? Does it go into a actual reverse or sort of move from park to reverse?
Have you checked your error codes?
When was it last serviced? A basic service draining the fluid and changing the internal in most automatics fixes a whole host of issues.

A manual is always helpful at this stage.
