Instrument Cluster

Hi
I'm new to this forum.
I just wanted to post my thoughts on an event that has occurred to me twice.
Both occasions happened the same day, and after reading around the web, i have not discovered any answers.
On new years day 2012 the instrument cluster on my w211-08 faulted, no display
i took it to a mercedes specialist who tried to find the problem but couldn't. the cluster wasn't responding. so it was a replacement cluster £1,200.00
I didn't go ahead because of the post Christmas visa extravaganza.
2 days later, hey presto! there she is, all recovered from the hangover.
Not one problem through 2012
until
New years day 2013!
Now the whole unit packed in, no fuel gauge, no temp, no speedo, no rev counter etc etc. nothing but external lights permanently on in day time.
well, this was different from 2012 so i assumed that she had had a flashback and decided that she couldn't cope with those festive blues ever again.
So i paid for my new part £960.00, and naturally - the pre diagnosis, removal, re-installation and reprogramming cost.
And then ..
today the little devil decided to pop back on.
I think a lot of folks are spending good money at the least convenient time over a merc part that suffers a real bad new years hang over.
I'd love to know if this has happened to any one else?
If happens to any of you guys, just wait! and save yourself a nasty/unnecessary expense.

Yes, sounds like the wife's 2000 S430. We purchased it about 4 years ago with 52K on the odometer and 1 year left of the 10 year warranty on the cluster.

Wifey came home a few months later all worked up that her cluster went black while at the supermarket. I checked it out & was all OK, but took it into the dealer. Service mgr says our vin# is just within the group that had problems so have a seat & they will replace it free!

After a cup of excellent coffee, I was informed gleefully that the # on my cluster was from an older group, outside the recall #s & since it was working now, I should be on my way. If I could bring it in inoperable within the 10 year limit, they would be glad to replace it free, otherwise **(insert mechanic's shrug). Since then It has happened a few more times, typically for a 5 or 10 minute drive home, but always returned to normal after sitting overnight.

We only drive about 6,000 miles/year & had a few slow starter episodes which led me to hook up a battery saver/trickle charger in the trunk. So long as I remember to plug in the tender, we haven't had any further problems. My theory is a low battery condition causes the computer to divert volts from the cluster until the battery charge improves.
