New Member Introduction
I already posted this on the W140 subforum. I apologize for overlooking this forum initially.
I live in Ontario, Canada, and recently my wife and I went to an Estate Auction where it turns out that the old man had a car collection, including a black 1997 S600 which I could not resist. I lived in Munich, Germany during the 1990s and remember seeing this "diplomat" car all the time. Mirrors were broken, headliner fabric lose, rear window shade does not operate, but otherwise it looks brand new on the outside. Bought it and drove it home. Got registration and temporary insurance and drove it 85 km to a Mercedes dealer/service for a checkup. It has 191,000 km and drives well, however, with a lot of yellow lights on.
It turns out, in addition to my above "need to fix", Mercedes found the following:
- Required new front coil springs
- R/H cat converter broken
- Differential leaking (remove and re-seal)
- Both mirrow frames broken
- R/R seat belt in-op
- Check engine light not working
- Brake linings ok, but rotors pulsating
- Possible power steering leak
- Engine only running on 6 cylinders
- ABS light on and requires further diag
Due to the prices of original parts, I decided to drive the car home again, put it in the garage, and source parts myself, fix what I can, and then bring it back to Mercedes for the engine/electronic stuff.
Have already sourced two new cat converters from USA. Found good instructions on this forum how to remove the headliner.
Have difficulty finding any left and right side complete mirrors!!!
Thank you all.
