Looking to purchase my first Benz. Looking for suggestions.

Hi everyone,

I'm not only new to the forum but new to Mercedes Benz as well. I'm looking to purchase a toy and I find myself very interested in 1970-80 four door MBs. I particularly like the round multiple headlight models. I'm looking for something RELATIVELY reliable. As for my budget, I hope to be somewhere in the 5000 range. I don't know how possible that may be. I also have no problems investing in mechinical issues or upholstery. Is it very difficult to find parts or to work on those model years?

Being new to MBs, I don't know the models in that year range to well. I was hoping someone could suggest a model type and engine to consider.

I do like diesels very much but don't know how the reliablity compares to gas or if the benefits of one outweigh the other.

Thank you so much for reading and I look forward to hearing you response.

Hi and welcome. Mercedes-Benz in 70's - 80's had lot of models that were extremely reliable. MB go by the chassis number, the models usually go by a 3 digit number that is almost always referring to the engine displacement (300D means 3000 cc and Diesel engine,) the chassis number is a 3 digit number as well and has a letter W before it.

The OM602 engine (5 cylinder diesel) made it into the Guinness book of records for lasting over 1.000,000 miles

So I would strongly recommend following chassis: W114, W115, W123, but there are many others that your budget would take. In USA the older Mercedes-Benz don't have a value, so you can get them for hardly any money and usually they are in good condition because of the manufacturing quality. I would avoid models from 90's, but I know that you will find a lot of happy owners if these models in here as well.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum.

By the way, I'm considering selling my car, so if you aren't scared of a project car, you might want to look at my old lady.
