remote key help

Hi I am having trouble with a remote key for a 430E 1998, this is in Australia, Mercedes that stopped working suddenly. I have followed the instructions from the manual and changed the batteries. When I press the unlock, lock and boot unlock a red light flashes but doesnt unlock any of the processes.

Apparently in one article I read it stated that you have to reactive the remote by turning ignition and pressing unlock button so many times, but the key would not turn in ignition.

Can anyone give me some help with this problem? Thanks from a very tiredmerc.

If you have an infrared smart-key, after replacing the batteries you resynchronize the key by inserting it into the starter (ignition) switch. Not sure how long it takes - could be a while.

remote key help

Looks like I will have to stick with my spare key and hope not to lose it. Priced new key $500 Aud. Car is old with plenty of Ks travelled and reaching its time out. Last couple of years have spent way too much keeping it on road this long. Thank you for replies received.

There is a member here who might be able to fix your key for about $100 + shipping to Texas - drkknght. He advertises on eBay as mbkeyfobs. The ad specifies MY2003-2009 fobs but it wouldn't hurt to PM him and ask.

1998 and up knobs in US are not programmable as they come preprogrammed from the shipping warehouse.
You key might fail, or loose rolling codes. I heard that Witek's advise for leaving the key in the ignition turned to on will help the car and the key re-communicate. Some say 1 hr would not hurt.

So is your problem with the remote opening the door, or with the ignition chip?
Ignition chip is not using battery.
If this one is bad - you need to use spare key.

The most common failure for these keys is the coil that picks up power from EIS when the key is inserted to the ignition slot. It could be a broken coil (you can measure it with a MM) but often it is just a soldering issue. Resolder the coil carefully and try again.

You can try to press a button at the key (open doors) while inserting the key to the ignition slot, this way you power up the key from the key battery. Might be tricky though.
