1973 220D

Hello there!

I'm a new member and fairly new to cars in general. I haven't owned a car in over 8 years and got into Mercedes-Benz Diesels specifically for Waste Vegetable Oil conversion. I've been researching the process for about two years and took my time finding a car. I just purchased one that seems like it will be perfect -- a 1973 220D with 128,000 miles on it. The car is in great shape and came from California with no rust. Purchased from someone in Michigan who had it sitting in a barn for years. I have some photos attached.

It's at the mechanic right now getting the cobwebs knocked out of it. They had to do some work on a sticky throttle and replace the starter. It's still having some trouble cold starting which seems normal. I'm planing on solving this with a simple 300V Kat magnetic block heater and just generally not driving it in winter. I'm planing on putting in some Diesel Kleen, too. Is there any other general maintenance that would be good to preform on a diesel that's been sitting around for several years? From there it's off to Full Circle Fuels in Oberlin, Ohio for the conversion.

I've also been trying to figure out why the back of the car says '230' instead of '220'. Does anyone here have any ideas about that? I've looked online a ton and can't find much. The owner's manual and title all have the car listed as a 220, but that's not what's on the trunk.

This forum has been super helpful in this process. Thanks to everyone for contributing.

i have same car , i would not use vegy oil in it , it gets 30 to 35 mpg , i wonder if trunk lid was replaced at one time .do a valve adjust , also the colder it get , you have to glow a longer time . red line used to do good , but now with the cleaner [ low sulfure ] fuel , you almost dont need it . 60 mph is about right , anything faster is elder abuse .
