Need some help - troubleshooting C240- 2002..

Hello.. I am Chad.. I recently bought a C240-2002.
I have two Qs.. Sometimes I hear a "tik tik tik" noise from the engine area when the car is started and today I found that the noise is coming from this small part located on right close to shocks. two black pipes are connected to it and also two wires. It looks like some sort of a pump to me and I have given a picture here. can somebody please tell what this part is and is this a serious issue?
.... Also... yesterday when i tried to start i felt like a miss and did not start until the 4th time. Check engine light came and it also went away in about 5 mins... now all fine... is this like a warning .. and is this connected to this crazy part...?

Welcome aboard.

Please note that you're more likely to get model-specific help when you post in the forum specific to your car, rather than this general one which is really quite broad.

The valve you're talking about is the purge valve and the ticking is normal.

I would get the codes checked. That the CEL went out is meaningless, as you'll still have codes stored. Find out what they are and then you can figure out if it's something that can be ignored (a transient) or if it's a sign of impending issues that might be costly or leave you stranded (or both).

Good luck.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)
