722.906 7 seeds transmission issue

I have 2008 CLK350 with transmission that stopped engaging. I heard whining noise from the engine compartment, car does not move and I had to tow it home the other day. Next morning while car was cold it drove normally; when it warmed up, issue came back. Mercedes mechanic visited me at home and diagnosed failing transmission front pump. He said that transmission needs to be removed, pump replaced. Codes that I red prior tis arrival were P0894 and P0688. I wonder if this problem can be of electronic nature or it is really failing pump? Can clogged filter cause something like this. Can pump be replaced without tranny being removed?
Appreciate any help.

How many miles does this car have? Should not happen just like that on a 4 year old car...

If the pump was the cause then it would be the same hot or cold, so no I do not believe this. Same goes for a blocked or partially blocked filter. These transmissions have known valve body problems. The key to all this is the mileage which you did not say.

Car has 42K miles. When I step on gas pedal, RPMs go up but nothing happens except that whining noise which per mechanicis a pump. What else can be causing this? Is it wiser to go with another used transmission if It is something major or to repair this one?

At this mileage something is seriously wrong, it will be cheaper to repair the transmission you have. I wonder how much fluid is in the transmission. Have you noticed any fluid leaks?

No leaks, parked in garage all the time so I would have noticed. Plus transmission fluid was replaced by dealership 6 months ago. Does transmission need to be removed in order for pump to be replaced?

Yes it does, the pump is at the front of the transmission connected to the torque converter. But I do wonder if they put the correct amount of fluid in when they changed it.

Wouldn't I feel the lack of fluid? Car was driving like a dream, never had any issues.

Can code P0688 which is " ECM/PCM power relay sense circuit/open" can be related to this issue? I have suspicion that something electronic is causing this since I don't hear any mechanical noise, rough shifting etc. and problem goes away once you cool down or restart the car.

Low fluid level would not damage a transmission straight away, it would deteriorate over time, first of all the fluid temperature would be too high. (when changing the fluid we measure the temperature using DAS to ensure the level is correct) temperature is all important with transmission fluid, your problem comes when the fluid is hot, which to me means lack of fluid, but this could also be a weak or damaged pump.

But I have never had to change a pump of the 7g tranny. Known problems are the valve body and a spring clip on one of the drums.

This appears to be a lack of fluid problem at high temp, now is it the pump, or the valve body? or simply a lack of fluid?

Give me a few minutes and I will look up the procedure for level check, by eye and you can get them to check this whilst you watch and then you will know if it is a low fluid level, oh and I need your vin # to find this info in WIS.
