Mercedes aren't for people who want to have one, it's for people who can have one.

Build quality has been back on track since the divorce with Chrysler

US is the biggest car buyer and MB politics to sell only luxury models on this market is likely backfiring during bad economy.
Not too many people make enough to drive 60-100k car, so Fiat with its $15k model is taking over the cheap car market.
This is where 15 or so years old Smart could not make it.

Does Mercedes need to be the top luxury brand? Share holders may disagree with this but I would be much happier if Mercedes just made great cars than tried to cater to every possible need and price range. If I want a practical family car I'll get a Ford Fusion. If I want an econobox I'll get a Camry. But all of those suck; Mercedes' customer base wants luxury cars built with cost-is-no-object engineering. The push for profit will ruin a good brand! </rant>

You can build a great car that doesn't cost $60-100,000. The C-class for example.
