new member and question

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum. My '82 240D is slowly being improved. I do the work, but ran into a problem with the turnsignal cancellation device, so I am looking for help here. I've read what is on the web, but nothing particular about this model. The stalk is out of the car, and I'm looking at its operation. It seems to look alright, nothing broken. On the stalk, there is a plastic tab that extends when the turnsignal is on. This is on two springs which look fine. On the steering column, lining up with this tab, is a slightly raised metal section. This is not electrical, but probably for wear. I guess the metal section trips something that cancels the signal, but when I press the tab in by hand, nothing else changes. Does anyone have experience with this? The right one works, left return does not, all systems look unbroken and onworn. Thanks in advance-- John

BTW I tried this post on the W123 section but did not get an answer.
