My C280 202 never had that issue. The radiator blew around 80k miles. I had it flushed regularly using the plug on the side of the engine. I'm told this helps keep it clean. I don't know if it keeps the head gasket in good shape or not.
I had a jag that had the brown coolant with chunks in it. I was told that it was from a shop putting the wrong stuff in it at some point and the old coolant reacted with the new and caused this sludge. I had constant cooling issues and eventually lost coolant at high speed and warped the head.
I need to get a car soon. I found a W123 280e with very low miles online. Of course it sold before I could see it. I have been thinking about another w202 or newer C. What year did the wiring issues stop? Mine was a 95, it needed a throttle body and wire harness for $4500.
I liked my C280. It was a nice small car, but almost everything on it needed to be replaced under 100k miles. The inline 6 was the only part on the car that lasted. Everything else broke, with proper maintenance from MB. Transmission, Differential, full suspension, power windows, a computer of some sort, stereo parts, and lots more.
I am also scared of the rusting control arm issue on these and other newer MB cars.
