I am new to this site.

I previously had a w202 c280. It had the degrading wiring that many cars had which led to multiple issues.

I am planning to purchase a w126 and I also am interested in a couple of older e-class models.

I would like to know if the early 90's e-class models had the degrading wiring issues and if there was a year when this started within the same model run.

Thank You for any information.

Hello there Oliver and welcome to Benzworld.

The wiring harness issue started in 1993 for both the E and S classes.

We can conclude that w126 never had this problem, and w124 had it from 1993 to 1995 so all w124's before 1993 never had this problem (duh ). However, at some point the cylinder head for w124's got an update, if I'm not mistaking, in 1989.

Many engines were shared between w124 and w126, most noticeably the 6 cyl. 3.0L 12v m103 engine.

Hope you find the above helpful

Current vehicles:
1-MB W124 300e 12v 1992 +425k Km (daily drive)
2-Ford Crown Victoria 2009 (used when needed).

Previous vehicles:
Ford Crown Victoria 2001 (sold in early 2009)
MB W124 200 1986 (sold in late 2005)
MB W126 500 1986 (sold in late 2004)

Thank You.

Is there any big advantage to finding a car with the head upgrade?

You're most welcome.

As far as I know, the improved cylinder head protects the valve guides and seals much better therefore less possible engine oil consumption due to their wear and tear.

Forgot to say that this applies, as far as I know, to the 6 cyl. engines with 12 vales which are the engines with displacements 2.6 and 3.0 on w124 and the same plus 2.8 on w126.

A piece of info I learned from this community; Benzworld.

Much more details are there to be know and knowing what exactly is the engine you are aiming for will help. Then you can ask in the corresponding section for it. Not many people come here to the introduction section.

Best of luck finding what you need.
