SL500 heater control issue

Hi all,
I am a W113 280SL fan. I love their quality and simplicity, but here I am working on a 1992 SL500 with a heater control issue. I would appreciate some shared knowledge from you experts. It seems that the switch to engage the valve for the foot heat works intermittently. I have searched these topics and have not been successful. The heater control buttons do not always behave as I would expect. fan speed four button does not operate; its LEd does not light and there is no response. The Defrost button and function does work, so I know the fan is capable. If the heater control is in Auto mode I can push the windshield vent button and turn on the windshield vent, but if I then press the button for the floor vent I generally get no response from the floor vent button LED or from the vent valve itself. If I first press the defrost button to turn on defrost, and then press the button for the floor vent, usually the button LED lights and the floor vent actuates, but not always. I have tried the reset procedure, setting the temp roller to "low" and pressing the defrost and recirculate buttons and there is no reset. I have tried the procedure to pull up the fault codes and there is no response. Since sometimes the buttons do work I assume that the vacuum lines are good. Since the buttons' actions are intermittent I am thinking that the button pad is worn out. Any comments would be appreciated. I have searched and have not found instructions on how to take the dash apart to open things up and take a look at the various controls. Can anyone tell me what the problem with the heater controls might be? Can anyone point me to a thread on disassembling the system? Thanks in advance for your help.

pagodanut, I suggest you post this in the R129 sub-forum or ask a moderator to move it there as you will probably get a quicker answer there.

Mercedes aren't for people who want to have one, it's for people who can have one.
