Help! Locked out of our car. ('94 C280)
I just found this forum today so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong area. I am 28 yr old schoolteacher, my wife is 22 and we know relatively little about fixing car problems. I have been meaning to join a forum like this for several months anyway, ever since we bought our '94 C280.
It's got a few quirks but overall it is a great car. It is my 2nd Mercedes. Several years ago I had an '84 300D with 275,000 miles and I miss it terribly.
Ok some history: When we bought the car the only way that you could lock or unlock it was by using the key in the trunk lock. Very annoying but we needed a car for $3,000 and I knew from prior experience that even if a Mercedes had quirks that it would still be a very good car for us. The clicker of course does not work. I've often wondered if it just needs a new battery but unlike other keys I cannot figure out how to take it apart without breaking it. And that is saying a lot considering I used to work at RadioShack where I'd have no less than 20 people a day coming in to buy batteries for those things.
So far the lock problem hasn't been a big deal until this morning. I got to work and my wife immediately called me saying that I needed to come back to the house. She could not get the car to unlock. She would turn the key to the left and nothing would happen. She said that the trunk would open though. Turning the key to the right would cause it to make the noise (vacuum pump I'm assuming) it usually does when it locks.
Also, it was much colder than usual this morning (even here in Florida, probably about 55 degrees) because of the Hurricane activity here on the east coast, but not so cold that I would think it would effect any car in any significant way.
So, as the title says, I've got a car sitting at home right now that we can't get into and I'm hoping to figure it out when I get home from work today. This is as good a time as any to come on here and ask advice:
So, please, Help!
Thanks in advance,
Ok so when I got home yesterday afternoon, the car unlocked just fine (from the trunk I mean. Nothing else suddenly started to work). So I thought, huh... that problem is solved.
BUT, then we got up this morning and thought we'd better double check. It's even colder this morning (46), and lo and behold, it doesn't work. The key fits all the way in, you can turn the lock all the way to the left, , but nothing happens. Perhaps it is a temperature issue after all.
