This is just MY opinion.
Starting off, I love Mercedes and BMW. My favorite cars.
Mercedes- To me, a Mercedes is the best of the best. When you drive a Mercedes, it's an aggressive way of saying, "I've made it" and you want a well made car. Yes, a Lexus says "I have a nice stable income" and they too are good cars, but a Mercedes has more of a "fuck you" approach to it. Almost brash, but not really. It's like "Yes. I do well, and an Audi is a well made car that would show that just as well, but I also have taste and I care about what I drive." It's hard to explain.
BMW- Now, a BMW is a little different. To me, if you're trying to decide on a luxury car, a Mercedes and BMW wouldn't be compared. A BMW is a luxury item, yes, but I've always seen them more as... sports cars. Buying a BMW is like saying, "I wanted a well made sports car, so it's worth the money."
I never have understood why people try to compare the two. Well, I do get it, but I don't.
When it comes to flagships, nothing beats the S class. Period. The XJ is nice, the 7er is nice, the A8 exsit, but nothing does it like the S class. On the same page, nothing compares to the 3 series. My family owns a C300 luxury, and I love it... but it's not the same. The C class is just too luxury to compare to the 3 series. The ultimate sport sedan.
....But that's just me.
