This is a simple but good question. For me Mercedes-Benz will always be #1, with BMW at #2 (not counting exotic car makers). I have owned both, and love both companies, but definitely prefer Mercedes. They just have the history, founded from the two oldest cars in history (Benz and Daimler) and they constantly innovate and perfect the automobile. I also feel as if BMW has lost their way around the early 00's, while Mercedes was also slumping a little, they are starting to make very good cars again that are the best in the world.
Still, there is something about BMW's built in the 80's and early 90's that just look right. They have elegance to them, but also a sporty feel and look at the same time. To me that is the golden era of BMW's. For Mercedes, there isn't so much a certain decade that epitomizes it more than another. They've made quality vehicles in their entire century plus history.
