I know this topic has probably been covered before, but just wanted to have a little fun and get some feedback from the other members...
Whats your opinion of the new Mercedes Benz automobiles vs the vintage ones.
My '76 450SL is only the second Benz that I've owned. Years ago I had a 1972 220D with a 4 speed manual trans. These cars are as heavy as tanks, which I'm sure contributed to the unmatched ride comfort they both have. I ran my old diesel almost 400,000 miles. With really no major repairs. And you know, even after all those years and miles things that we all take for granted in our American Built counterparts, such as the upholstery... All that was still totally intact. The dashes aren't all cracked, the seats aren't worn out, the window mechanisms all work. The cars never rattled or leaked. It just seemed like everything worked on the cars.
A few weeks ago I went out with a friend who has a late model SUV (Not sure which one... Its BOXY). He has had a lot of trouble with that car. The tranny totally went kaput after only like 40,000 miles. It rattles, has electrical problems, one window doesn't work. Another friend has a BRAND NEW SL350 that he just bought and I had the opportunity to drive it and I have to say, the new ones just seem DISPOSABLE to me... They feel lightweight and kind of cheap...
It made me think... How many of you think that the 2012 SLK (or ANY model for that matter) will still be around and driving when they are 36 years old??
