2001 S55 AMG into '64 w111 coupe - what do I need?
I am considering doing a 'Mechatronic' of my own on the w111 coupe. I have found a 2001 W220 S55 AMG with ridiculously low km for sale overseas (I live in Australia) that could be a good donor. However, customs laws make it necessary to break the car up. These are my options:
1) Bring in the whole car, but it has to be done in 2 separate shipping consignments - the body in one, and all the mechanicals (engine, trans, and all suspension in another). Then I get the whole car, but shipping costs will be very high.
2) Only bring in what I need. However, what do I need? Ideally I would run the engine, trans, rear end and instruments cluster. Maybe the power windows and door locks. So what electronic boxes/cabling etc would I need to get?
Unfortunately, I know nothing about the various BUS systems and how they all talk to each other. I know in Australia that plenty are doing LS conversions for which aftermarket controllers are readily available, but I am not sure about Benz - probably very limited. I read 48 pages about a conversion of an S500 motor into a Chrysler Crossfire and was scared by all the troubles with re-coding ECU's and keys to VIN numbers etc. Lots of specialist software (in German!) required. Would I be struck by the same problems? I just don't know if that level of expertise exists in Australia.
Am I nuts for even considering this? I suspect I am.
Thanks for any advice forthcoming,
