W210 Vacuum Pump Problem Resulting in Multiple Malfunctions!

I think I have a Vacuum Pump issue in my 1998 E320 4Matic.

Symptoms:
  • The remote will not lock or unlock the car however, when I push the unlock button on the remote, the exterior lights will flash. (I assume that the remote is funcitonal since the lights flash, telling me that the vehicle recieved the remote signal.

When I open the door, I cannot get the courtesy lights to turn on when the doors are open. However, I can hit the button on the roof counsle to turn on the lights manually, and they work.

The trunk remote will not work, nor with the interior trunk release switch.

The head restraint release on the center counsel does not work.

The small red light on the unlock switch is on constantly.

I don't hear any pumping sound when I hit the remote button or the interior unlock button.

I checked the fuses to the pump, a big 20 fuse, and it was fine.

I'd appreciate any ideas of where to go from here. I've read that the pump maybe to blame, but they rarely fail. The car has just 163, 000 KMS.

Many thanks!

Brad.

pull the main 20 amp fuse out for 2 mins this usually reset the vaccum pump. If the systems starts working correctly you have one of two fault,
A.Their is a leak and when the pump overheats it switches off
B. the pump has an internal fault

Thanks for the prompt reply.

The pump doesn't make any noise when I use the remote to open or close the car. Thus, I don't think it's getting any power. I checked the 20 amp fuse by pulling it and it looked fine.

I suspect a power issue yo the pump. I may try to check the power supply to the pump tomorrow. I assume all I need to do is check the power supply wire to the pump. BUT, which wire us it.

With the light issue you might have faulty door switch.
Is the pump working when you hit central, or trunk lock buttons on the console?
FYI we do have W210 section here

Thanks for your reply. I will search the forums to see what I can find out about the door switch.

As for the central switch on the dash, there is a constant red light, and when I toggle the switch, nothing happens. I don't hear the pump at all.

Any suggestions? I'll read through the W210 section, thanks!

I pulled the big orange 40amp fuse from slot #19 and waited about 5 minutes before replacing it.

No change in the problem. When I push unlock on the remote, the parking lights flash, but that's it! The vacuum pump is located right next to the fuse box under the back seat and doesn't make any noise when I try to unlock or lock the doors. I also true to use the dashboard switch and again the pump was silent.

Any further DIY suggestions? Any thanks to everyone who is trying to help!

Did you read the codes?
Those on OBD2 scanner as well those on clima LCD display?
Red light on the switch indicate something. I think it indicate that your security system is constantly on, what would explain why locks don't work.
Why security system would not go off, that is more advanced issue than my knowledge.
How about trying the other key?
Are the locks working with ignition on?

I'm not getting any error codes with an OBD scanner. No error codes on the dashboard either. The only thing that indicates something is wrong is that the red light is constantly on on the door lock switch. I just purchased this vehicle which was parked for an extended period of time. The previous owner said it was working before. (I do believe him). The battery was obviously dead so I bought a new one.

As for the other key....interestingly the second key isn't recognized by the car. However, the steel key insert does work to open the doors and trunk.

I also think there might be something going on with the security system but I don't know where to start. I've checked all of the fuses and they appear to be fine.

I'm open to any DIY ideas!

Thanks everyone!

GET THE SECOND KEY regardless the present problems, unless you are ready for much bigger issues.
That might fix everything anyway.

I've got the second key and it isn't recognized by the vehicle.

Can anyone tell me what the solid red light on the indicator lamp of the central locking switch means? Page 39 of the owners manual states that a blinking lamp indicates that the alarm is armed.

If I assume a solid lamp indicates that the alarm has been activated, shouldn't I hear the alarm? I would also assume I couldn't drive the car. However, in my case I can start and drive the car. Additionally, when I click the disarm button on the remote, the parking lights flash, so I assume that deactivates the alarm?

This is so confusing! It just doesn't make sense to me!
