1995 SL 500 power loss smells like rotten eggs

i am new here.........aloha...yes i am from Hilo Hawaii Usa....

Have a 1995 SL 500 loss power the other day.....after satrting up warm after parker for 10 minutes, rough idle ..check engine light on. Drive off the lot and it hasw no power at all...barely goes to 4000 rpm with pedal to forr...feels like 4 cylinder; however, no misfire.

next day changed fue filter, not too bad, bout had it off......the one that fits is the one with nipples on end not fitting.....my partys guy said it was for a 1997 model S L 500....fuel sample looks clean, fesh, no water

check the rotors, distributor cap and plugs...all good, plugs like new bosch...look a little lean. Non fouled

Restart same problem...no power test drive no power, again a bit of a rotten egg smell.. HELP ?

thinking about clogged catalyst ? or maybe how to clear the codes ?

in park from idle rev it up and sounds like a bit of swooshing out the exhaust like clogged catalyst.....car has 74,215 miles on it...very pristine car......air filters super clean....

Also when i bought the car 5b months ago the radio was off and i head to recode it toi work leading me to believe that either the battery was dead , diconnect for a time or replced.......could this be a problem starter ?

All help cordially invited

No good mercedes or independent shop within 100 miles ....HELP

My best guess was to disconnect the twin catalytic converters up front and run it open ....however, a friend said that mercedes benz have problems with codes some time when battery disconnected or changed and neeed to be cleared......

bottom line is i need help.... i do not have a scanner,,, my friend has a snap on scanner and we are not sure if it will give the coeds and or clear them

First things first...Whats my next step please ?

Does the engine rev normally when the car is in park?

There are two distinct possibles here without reading the codes that I can think of and CATS are def one possible, loosening the pipes and testing is a good idea. Also a blocked cat will get very hot and may be burning sulfur which would create the bad egg smell.

The other is the MAF sensor as you said the plugs seemed to look like a lean mixture. But for the MAF test equipment is needed to verify this.

1995 SL 500 power loss

yes.........we are thinking along the same lines......

Is there a cheap easy way to get the codes...and then clear them ?

I would really like to get the codes and clear them

Especially before taking off the exhaust upstream of the cats...

I cannot help with test equipment, but there is no such beast as cheap test equipment.

You do not need to take the exhaust off, simply loosen the joints upstream of the cats and test it like that, a little noisy yes but it will prove or disprove this. Loosening the connections will allow any back pressure to escape.
