I am new here and am a former Mercedes-Benz owner. Current family saloon is a little Honda Civic. However, as I have grown up in Merc and have owned a few before, I am presently looking at a good used W211 E220 CDi.
Here in South Africa, Diesel fuel sometimes is dirty and contain dirt particles. No, I am not discussing sulphur but dirt of a different kind. Much has been said about this and you are welcome to take a look at Diesel Buyers Beware [Archive] - 4x4 Community Forum

The E220 CDi will be used as a daily commute from time to time but much of its use will be medium long distance driving within a radius of 100-1,500km. I am presently looking at one that has covered some 65,000km and is in excellent condition.
The Diesel fuel situation is a worry, though, as fitting 3rd party filtration systems is not encouraged by most manufacturers. My old 240DA had no problem as those engines were of the old tough but less refined types. The various 300D,s in t5he family also never had injector problems.
Anyone with good experience and working knowledge as well as technical skill/education are welcome to comment. What I do not wish to do is to add all sorts of additives to the car's fuel. Things like two-stroke oil, for example, is not what I would prefer to use.
I am more interested to know what to be expecting of this car should I buy it. What trouble van I be expecting from it, are there any typical pitfalls, etc. Injectors, turbocharger....how long do these typically last? I am content to drive at 100-120km/h and have a light foot when accelerating.
I could always manage around 9km/l on my old W115 220,s, for instance, even when laden.
