Question Please help Diagnose my 1989 420 SEL

Hello,

I purchased a 1989 Mercedes 420 SEL used and was able to drive it twice before it broke down. The engine in idle wavered from a normal pace to a low sputter and alternated back, which from the start had me concerned. It almost seemed as though it were going to completely stop, but would pick right back up. So in essence, it did not idle smoothly from the start. Also, the gear shifter was very loose, and actually jammed the second time I drove it. It went from park to reverse, but would not allow me to move the gear shifter to any position past reverse. I ended up driving in reverse back into my driveway, from which I (thought I) shifted it back into park, and proceeded to turn the car off. Well, the car began rolling (it obviously failed to recognize being in park), so I set the emergency brake. I went to start her up again, and it wouldn't, being a lack of acknowledgement of it's "park" status..
I would like to know what the problems are likely to be, and what I can do to possibly address the issues. I was thinking it may be the shift-linkage bushing and possibly the OVP Relay, though I certainly am no expert at this!

Thank you for your time!
