123 or 124 chassis?

I'm in the market to purchase a used diesel MB most likely from the 80s because this forum has endorsed them as having really great strong engines. My question is, do I want a 123 chassis or a 124? I'm scheduled to look at an 87 with low mileage this week and have heard that although the six cylinder is a great engine, it does have its problems like cracked heads. However, it's a more modern engine and still a work horse. Others have thought the 123s better because they're simpler and stronger. Any help would be much appreciated.
On E-bay, if anyone is interested is an 84 Mercedes with a five speed transmission. It was some kind of state or government car that was actually shipped in from Germany in the day. It's a beauty. I have my eye on it but the price is going up.

W124 all the way. more refined chassis, aerodynamics (lower drag and much quieter), better suspension.

you looking for gas or diesel?

I've had my W124 300E for almost a month and it's been the best purchase I've EVER made. It paves out road imperfections and the I-6 is the smoothest engine I've ever driven. Love the W123, but most I see are rusted in some way or another. You can't really go wrong with either, but the W124 is newer, sells cheaper, smoother, and looks just as good if not better. Good luck!

As always in the life, you have to give something to gain something.
W123 are really bulletproof vehicles and hold even after 40 years
BUT they don't have ABS, no airbags and several new technology gadgets. Also are fuel hogs comparing to newer vehicles.
W124 are much more advanced cars, but as you already found they have several manufacturing weak points and their interiors don't hold too well.
Personally I would not like to drive the car without airbag, although member just having
accident in 20+ old W124 reported the original airbag did not deploy.
decisions, decisions, decisions >>> good luck on your search.
