Air conditioning conversion

I'm looking to buy a mid 80s 300D and have come across some that are for sale that talk about having to upgrade or convert the AC. Can anyone tell me about this? Does this mean that any older Mercedes I purchase will need to be converted and about how much money does this cost?

You are talking about converting from R12 to R134a. I had it done some time back in my w126. It ended up not costing as much as one would think maybe $200 or $300. This was 10 years ago at least though. If you ac system is in good shape I would see if can get a hold of some R12. It seems much cooler than the converted r134a system. I am not sure where you are located but if you are in MI, pm me and I will let you know where you can get the conversion done if you decide to go that route.

I still have a R12 system in a 1991 Toyota Camry I own. As Michael recommended, try to find someone who has a license for R12. As long as your system is holding a charge, R12 works more efficiently but be prepared to pay for it.
