Immobilisers again - E320CDI 2001

Hi all, this is a topic that seems to vex many people. All the threads I've seen refer to the green and red lights on the RVM. Mine doesn't have these, I think the receiver's in the door mirror.
The remote was becoming less sensitive, batteries were replaced but it was still a bit hit-and-miss. Yesterday, I opened the door with the metal key, alarm sounded, and ceased when key put in ignition; later - same thing but alarm did not cease immediately and now key will not turn or unlock steering. Alarm sounds again when door is opened. The red light does flash on the key when a button is pressed.
I presume the immobiliser is now "set" but some replies suggest that the key must be turned to a certain position, which I can't do.
I have the second key but, before travelling to try and retrieve the car, I imagine if one doesn't work, why should the other?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

To answer my own question - because the first one's bust!
The other key (I am fortunate to have received both with the car) did the job and unlocked everything with one bleep. There are now a couple of warning messages, probably because in a desperate attempt last night to fix it, I disconnected the battery briefly.
The fob that failed was, up until last week, the spare; over several days the car seemed slowly to stop responding to the remote lock and eventually didn't recognise the key - it seems fast for battery failure but maybe I forget how much I use it!
