I'm a newly registered reader. I've owned a succession of 123 sedans over the past 16 years, starting with a 240d, then a German-market 300d, non-turbo, 5 cyl, 5 speed Getrag gearbox, now a 1985 300 d, turbo, Ottomatic.
Earlier in life, my father had a 1950's Mercedes 300d, which was not a diesel, but a limosine type that I think was called an "Adenauer." He also had a mid-60's 250 SE, which was a great car.
I live in Belfast, Maine. Other cars lurking around the place are a 1985 Chev D-30, army surplus pickup, a Mitsubishi Expo (great car), a Dodge Mom-mobile, and my son's 2007 VW Rabbit with 5-cyl gas engine.
I work as a marine surveyor and tugboat captain (used to sail as engineer), and use the Mercedes for driving out to survey boats. Lots of 2-lane driving. The current car has 89,000 miles on it, and I'm contemplating switching the 5-speed manual out of the parts car, which I think might be the ultimate diesel.
