420SEL Transmission Won't Shift out of 1st

1991 420SEL will not shift out of first gear and will only reach approx 30mph at 4000rpm. For several months I had to let off the accelerator to get the transmission to shift, especially when cold. Once warm and on the highway, worked great. Let another person drive it one day and I don't think they did the decelleration excercise to allow the car to shift gears. It will shift into forward and reverse, but will not shift into second or any higher gear.

I did read many posts with similar, but not exact simptoms. From what I gather, this could be a bad B1 piston or B2 band.

Transmission shop wants $2,200 to rebuild/repair. Found one at a local bone yard for $500 with another $550 due for installation.

I can turn a wrench and am not afraid to try my hand at this repair, yet does this appear to be something the can be reasonably accomplished by a shade -tree guy? Input requested and appreciated.

These are not difficult transmissions to rebuild, but does require some experience.
