New Member + New owner of an 87 190e

Hey guys, I purchased an 1987 190e last week. With only 104,000kms. Car had been sitting for a few years when the previous owner could no longer drive. He had given it to his son to sell and i grabbed a bargain at 2k. I know nothing of mercedes, and i have only owned a handful of cars to date. So i thought i would join as i see there is alot of helpful people here . The body is straight, it seems like there is a few spots of surface rust in places, the engine is running alright. Although there is a clicking noise when reving sounds a little like a rattle, sounds like its coming from the belts(guy said it was chain driven) The car still drives fine though it just struggles to start up when cold takes about 2-3 turns before it kicks over. Any ideas on my next step? Oil, Fluids all seem fine. What can i do to improve it and what is the cost? As i am new to mercedes and i dont want to be ripped of by a mechanic as i have no knowledge about these cars. Thanks.

Congratulations on getting a Mercedes. When they are running good, they are a dream to drive.

So, your car has been sitting for 2 years?

I'd dump the gasoline first thing, as gas doesent last in the tank like it used to...

Change the oil and filter.

Flush the cooling system and add new antifreeze

Which engine is in your 190E? The 2.3, 2.6, 2.3-16??

Warm up the engine before you change the oil. Also, check the transmission fluid. Smell burned, or brownish color? If you dont know the history, I would change the transmission fluid and its filter.

Check the brake fluid level, and be sure the power steering pump is full.

The A/C and all the oddball MB things, like the OVP relay will come later.

Be prepared to shell out some loot on this car. They dont like to sit dormant like this.

I've got an '84 2.3 that sat for over 1 year before I bought it. I've spent close to $3500 on it since 2007, but it sure beats a car payment anyday.

Before I forget, Avoid the dealer, unless you absolutely cant find the part you want elsewhere.

Sorry about the late reply have been a little busy, but thanks alot for the reply its much appreciated!

Car was sitting for abit longer than that i was told around 5 years. I have changed the oil and filter, flushed the cooling system.

The transmission fluid doesnt smell burnt, it has a tinge of brown in it but still seems fresh. I will get around to that in the next week though.

Brake fluid and P/S fluid is all good. A/C works perfectly, it just has a problem i have noticed from driving it. When the petrol gets low (not on the light) the car starts to jerk, not vigorously but enough to feel it when trying to accelerate. I added injector cleaner to my next tank and when that got low it was still jerking, i then dumped the gas and added more injector cleaner in my next tank, it was alright for awhile but then started jerking again, is this a sign of a bad fuel pump? Maybe clogged?

Also, car burns alot of gas more then was expected. around 15l/100km half city half highway. Is that about right or is this an issue? Thanks in advance.

Theres a fuel filter near the rear axle... on the right side of the car. Mine had an original filter on it when I got the car... over 230,000 miles on it, too.

Check the rubber molded hoses under the air cleaner. If they are hard and not flexable, REPLACE THEM. They leak and cause the car to surge at idle.

Mine gets fairly decent gas mileage. 20-22, maybe... Mine is a project in progress!
