I don't have an oil cooler on my diesel, but why would the method of removing the oil have any effect on the amount left in an oil cooler?
Edit, Oh, I see your point. I contend that the extractor does as good a job as the drain, but it is probably not as fool proof as a drain plug. For example my dip stick is on the front of the engine, so parking my straight six slightly up hill and using the extractor would leave quite a lot in the engine, but the drain plug is near the front, so it is also not idiot proof.
