Hello/Thanks - My Story

Just wanted to say thanks to all the members who have contributed over the years to this forum! Your knowledge has made my success story possible...

Before I was born my father came home one day in 1976 after working 12 hours barely getting by and announced to my mother - "Tomorrow I am buying a Mercedes". My mother forbid him from it there was no way they could afford it. He declared he needed to feel important to be important. They fought all night about it and as she thought was decided he would not. My father just knew he had to look important to feel important to land the couple of deals he needed to get the company off the ground. Knowing it could be the end of his relationship he went ahead and had his best friend drop him off at the MB dealership and leave. However long later he drove off the lot in a pumpkin orange 240D w115 with 6 miles on it. Two weeks later he had closed his two largest clients which was the turning point in his business. Within a year he went into the same dealership and bought my mom a matching blue one but turbo and paid cash.

He sold it in 1986 with around 220,000 miles on it. I lost my father end of last year and through all the "remember whens" that car kept coming up in conversation. I always loved that car some of my fondest memories as a child were in that car and the road trips we took. I did some calling around and I am proud to say I am now the fourth owner of my dads original pumpkin! The body is flawless and the interior is just as nice (less a few hope to be easy things) but he person I got it from had let it sit for 10+ years unloved and neglected just 2,000 miles after putting in a completely rebuilt engine (10,000 miles on it). It was not running at the time and he loved that I was getting back so he just gave it to me free and clear. I towed it back to the house the fun began. Let me say up front I am not a mechanic but I know how to google follow instructions and I am a "computer geek/engineer" so I was up for the task.

Took about a week but I replaced glow plug, changed oil, oil filter/o-rings, cleaned oil bath/filter, changed transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, belts, fresh gas, new battery - first try after doing this put the key in let the plug warm up and it turned over like it had been driven daily!

I have been driving it a week now and put 130 miles on it and it drives better than all my other cars and is quickly becoming my everyday car. I live where it gets 100+ and humid so AC is a requirement. Today I took a few minutes to check it out and all it took was a new fuse a couple pounds of r12 and its blowing cold air again!

I still have some odds and ends things I am going to be doing to it (brake job this weekend) but this car is just begging me to make it my everyday car. I was talking to my next door work neighbor who has a huge lot he stores cars/trucks etc in (he is a mechanic) and just happened to have an identical 76 240D w115 sitting out in the lot for 5 years which I now have complete access to any part I need or want. I just hope it will take me to 1,000,000 because I am now on the way to it!

Thanks again for all the information everyone has on here without it none of this would be possible because I could not afford to have someone else do all the work for me!
