Could Use Some Help Picking an MB

How's it going everyone. I'm currently in the process of buying another car. I have about $6500 to spend. I'd really like to get a Mercedes Benz but the cost of repairs scares me a bit. I really want to know what class I could get that's within my budget and will be the most reliable. I've been looking at the E class and have liked what I've seen so far. I like the body styles from 1995 and up. This car would mainly be driven in the summer as I'm a college student (19 years-old). Most of my summer driving includes to and from work (about 25 miles round trip on a highway), around my town, sometimes New York City, and some occasional longer (4+ hours) road trips. I know service records are a must when I buy the car. Mileage isn't too big of an issue to me as long as it's not over 120k and the model is known to run for a long time (if properly maintained). Can anyone help me with this? Maybe give me some models to look at? Personal experiences are also greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Post Well........

I would recommend either a W123, W124 or W126 diesel or turbodiesel. The mileage is decent and you can learn to do a lot of the repairs yourself. A big plus is that other than the notorious 3.5 litre diesel (stay away from the 350SD, 350SDL) they will run almost forever! They are relatively simple and would be a good first Mercedes.

I do caution you, make sure the car is checked out by a Mercedes specialist. What looks like a beautiful car could end up being a huge money pit! Make sure you save AT LEAST $1500 for unforseen repairs!

Remember: "nothing is as expensive as a cheap Mercedes!"

Thanks so much for the response...good advice. However, I can't seem to find any w123's, 124's, or 126's on website within 100 mile radius of my home. Not sure what to do now...

Never mind, sorry. I was unaware that there were different models of the W's produced...haha. I'm a bit of a rookie in terms of Mercedes knowledge. Thanks for the advice!
