Alternator on 2002 E320 CDI Auto Diesel

Hi Members

I am new i have had the car 6 months it made a noise then stopped after a few minutes, the next day it made the noise again then stopped i started a visit home went 80 miles pulled in for toilets noise came back at low speed .
I pulled in the next garage to ask them to look they came out 10 mins later car would not start ,called Rac Break down, he tried jump leads car turned over but would not start.
Found Alternator pulley had jammed he said fault on alternator was pulling the battery down and pulley jammed bearing gone was stopping it starting.i had car towed home.
Alternator is cooled type has anyone changed one its not easy to get to, do i have to take the radiator off and how do you slacken off the belts i cannot see any adjuster, it is priced at £529 pounds is that a good price for the part not counting the fitting cost .
I think i could do it but it looks more difficult than any i have changed before any help would be great
