Hopefully I'm on the right track

Owning a MB diesel is a new thing for me, but I'm exited as I get into this bad boy. On the top of my to-do list was to find the vacuum leak that wouldn't allow the car to shut off - found it and fixed it. Second on my list, my hoopty was shifting way too soon and no take-off power. I've been told these cars are slow, but i don't believe is that slow. Anyway, I found a defective 3/2 valve and replaced them both, now its shifting hard, mainly downwards. I've checked all vacuum lines and connections and they seem tight. I just ordered a new dashpot (green).
Am I heading in the right direction on the shifting issue?

BTW, my next to-do is throttle linkage adjustment. Mine won't hit the kickdown switch and it feels real hard to keep the car at around 55-60. Does anyone have a DIY sequence for adjusting the throttle linkage?
